Dr. Kelly MixProgram Director
Kelly S. Mix, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM) at the University of Maryland. After teaching elementary school in Livermore, California for several years, Dr. Mix transitioned to academia because she was interested in understanding how different teaching processes work, as well as why some students struggle to learn concepts that come easily to others. Motivated to conduct research and influence policy at a broader level, she obtained a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Chicago in 1995.
Dr. Mix began her academic career in the Psychology Department at Indiana University (1996-2005), and later served on the faculty in College of Education at Michigan State University (2005-2016), where her work centered on applying the ideas from developmental psychology to educational practices. Her current research focuses on the development of mathematical cognition and number concepts in young children. Victoria Alexander
Doctoral Student
Victoria Alexander is a second-year student in the Human Development doctoral program and the Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences certification program. She is co-advised by Dr. Romeo in the Language, Experience, and Development Lab. Victoria is a first generation American of Caribbean descent. She grew up watching many of her peers discredit themselves from pursuing STEM fields within higher education. This has inspired her to find ways to build a bridge between socioeconomic status and academic achievement and to increase diversity within STEM fields. She is eager to explore the cognitive mechanisms involved in learning mathematics such as spatial skills and executive function, and to find creative ways to strengthen the cognitive skills necessary for academic success within mathematics. She is also interested in identifying ways the arts can be used to foster mathematical learning. In doing so, she hopes to enhance math learning and achievement especially among underrepresented populations. Victoria believes it is important to understand the neurological underpinnings and cognitive mechanisms involved in the aforementioned processes among diverse populations in order to better serve the next generation. Outside of academia, Victoria is a singer/songwriter, and loves to bake sweet treats with her friends.
